Die Surinaamse bedelaars van tegenwoordig gaan met hun tijd mee hoor. Hielden ze je in het verleden gewoon op straat staande en vroegen om een broodje of ‘wat lekkers’, vandaag de dag toveren ze voor je poort allerlei knappe trucjes en verhalen uit de kast om je lichter te maken. Gemiddeld heb ik twee keer per maand een arme sloeber aan de poort die een lekke band met zijn bromfiets heeft. En daarom dringend geld nodig heeft voor (afhankelijk van de bedenker) een nieuwe band/bus/taxi of ander verzinsel. Die brom hebben ze wonderwel nooit bij zich, die blijkt enkele straten verderop geparkeerd te staan. Als ik in een goede stemming ben hoor ik hun verhaal geduldig aan om ze daarna af te wimpelen, maar meestal stuur ik direct de hond op ze af. Want vasthoudend als ze zijn, vertrekken ze niet uit zichzelf.
