Ik kan het als journalist niet ontkennen: ik doe liever verslag van een gruwelijke ramp dan dat ik een saaie persconferentie moet bijwonen van een minister die toch maar de halve waarheid vertelt. Het is als bij een brandweerman, die blust tijdens een 24-uursdienst liever een paar branden dan dat hij zich in de kazerne zit te vervelen. Ook een politieagent handelt tijdens zijn shift bij voorkeur een paar ongelukken en burenruzies af dan dat ie saai een surveillanceronde draait en voor de accountant is het leuker boekhoudkundig gesjoemel te ontrafelen dan het schrijven van een jaarverslag voor een saai bedrijf.
Maar binnen je beroepsgebied zijn er ook grenzen. De brandweerman ziet liever geen verbrande lijken en de politieman persoonlijk geen doodgeschoten mensen. Ook journalisten hebben die grenzen. Maar ze worden helaas al te vaak overschreden. Zo is het bij Times of Suriname bijna iedere dag raak. Fotografen schijnen er genoegen in te scheppen om slachtoffers van ongelukken of geweld herkenbaar in beeld te brengen, liefst met het bloed dat van ze afdruipt.
